Sensory room
Autistic people often experience sensory processing differences, meaning they may be over-sensitive (hypersensitive) or under-sensitive (hyposensitive) to sound, light, touch, movement, or other sensory input. A sensory room:
- Reduces overwhelming stimuli from the outside world.
- Provides calming input (e.g., soft lights, quiet music, weighted items) when overstimulated.
- A sensory room is essential in autism care and support because it offers a safe, controlled environment where autistic individuals can regulate their sensory input, which significantly impacts their emotional, behavioral, and cognitive well-being.
